CHAPTER TEN
The restaurant doors flung open and Jake entered through them. I was setting the tables when he walked past me.
‘Didn’t see much of you last night,’ he said curiously, then kept walking.
I didn’t respond because I’m a terrible liar. The more I’d try and explain where I was last night would just dig me into an awkward hole, so I left it. Jake began moving the chairs down from the rest of the tables, and I could see him from the corner of my eye shooting glances over in my direction. I really hoped he hadn’t seen what happened last night, that would just be horribly embarrassing for me. I continued setting the tables when our first customers arrived for an early lunch. Within an hour the restaurant was full and buzzing as it normally was on the weekend. In the outside dining area the drinks were flowing and the conversation was growing to a gentle rumble.
Jake came in from outside where he was serving today. ‘Can you please do me a solid and take over outside for a while? I’m not feeling too good in the heat.’
‘Sure, no problem.’ He looked fine to me but it was a really hot day, so I made my way outside and took over his tables.
After half an hour I was just starting to feel the burn of the summer heat with a light sweat breaking across my forehead. The sun beat down hard through the patio and swept in underneath it in waves. The fans helped a little, as did the mist spray that would pulse out sporadically from the ceiling. I was glad every time someone ordered more food because I had to go back into the air conditioned restaurant to place the order, as the ordering system outside was broken. It gave a nice reprieve to be in the cool air, however short lived.
I wasn’t sure if I was imaging it, but I kept hearing Hudson’s name come up from a nearby table of young attractive women. I made my way over, topping up their glasses with water as I listened in on their conversation.
The woman with the largest breasts and lowest cut top said, ‘He’s such a player, I’m sure he thinks because he has all that money and a hot body, that he can do whatever he wants.’ She took a sip of her drink and continued, ‘He didn’t even try and get me off, and as soon as he finished fucking me, he asked me to leave!’
I made my way around the table one by one, filling their glasses.
‘What a scumbag!’ said one of the women.
‘Well, I won’t be drinking Cooper Wines anymore!’ said another.
‘Oh well, good riddance. I just wish I hadn’t wasted last night when I could have partied on with everyone else instead! He wasn’t worth my time, I’d go as far as saying he was terrible in bed,’ said the big breasted woman.
My heart sank and the sounds of the restaurant faded away as I got lost in my thoughts.
